Equipment Manager

Position Description

The Equipment Manager undertakes a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for the golf course and agencywide assets. This program includes the diagnostics and repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The equipment manager properly communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the Director and/or the assistant. The equipment manager places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building.

Primary Duties

Inspects, diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various golf course maintenance equipment, including, diesel-, electric- and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers, and other mechanical equipment used in utility work. Instructs and/or trains golf course maintenance workers regarding preventive maintenance, and the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment. Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work. Maintains a preventive maintenance program within budget on all equipment, and purchases repair parts and replacement supplies. Keeps a complete set of records for equipment and parts inventory purchases, equipment conditions, costs of repairs and preventive maintenance for all equipment. Spot checks equipment for performance on the course, makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course, and services or supervises servicing of equipment prior to use. Oversees the shop area maintenance. Regulates employees' use of equipment in absence of superintendent and assistant superintendent, if needed, and performs other duties as directed by the superintendent. Recommends equipment purchases and leases.

Desirable Qualifications

Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses. Skill in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repair. Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession. Ability to move heavy objects. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work. Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications as specified by supervisor. Ability to communicate effectively and keep business records. Knowledge of and/or ability to play the game of golf and understand how job performance affects the playing conditions of the golf course.

The City of Kent is currently accepting applications for the position of Golf Course Mechanic in our Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The incumbent in this position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work required to maintain the Riverbend Golf Complex fleet of vehicles, mowers, construction equipment, gas-powered and electrical carts, and range picker. The ideal candidate will have at least three (3) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic. It is critical that the person in this position be skilled in the safe operation of machines and tools to maintain and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of grounds, landscaping, structures and parks.  If you have the skills and experience necessary to successfully perform vehicle inspections, maintenance and repair, this position may be perfect for you.

General Purpose

Under the direction of the Golf Course Manager, or designee, incumbent performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work required to maintain Riverbend Golf Complex’s fleet of vehicles, mowers, construction equipment, gas powered carts, electrical carts and range picker.

Work is characterized by a substantial volume of skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of all Riverbend’s motorized equipment including specialized machines; using electronic testing equipment and hand and power tools are required.

Work is performed under limited supervision. The supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists incumbent with unusual situations, which do not have clear objectives or precedents. The incumbent plans and carries out assignments and handles problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures, and/or accepted practices. Work is evaluated for technical soundness and conformity to best practice, regulations, code and policy.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair gasoline, electric and diesel-powered grounds maintenance equipment; perform major repair of two- and four-cycle engines on mowers, tractors and loaders.
  • Perform maintenance on a fleet of gas or electric powered golf carts and/or work with external maintenance providers, where applicable.
  • Maintain, repair and rebuild air-cooled engines, hydrostatic drive trains, hydraulic pump units and carburetors.  
  • Repair and adjust engines, transmissions, high-pressure pumps and compressors, valves, differentials, clutches, rear ends and power take-offs.
  • Develop and implement a preventative maintenance program to include full engine tune-ups and tire replacement for maintenance trucks, all grounds equipment, and a fleet of powered golf carts; bed knife and reel sharpeners, grinders, driving range ball dispenser, and ball washer.
  • Perform maintenance on reel and rotary deck mowers; to include rebuilding rollers, cutting units and bed knife replacement.
  • Perform sharpening on reel and bed knives for greens and fairway mowers.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on turf aerators, core harvesters, vehicle chemical spray tanks and calibration.
  • Adjust and reline brakes; maintain, rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components; perform front end alignment and repair; change and balance tires; lube, change oil, filters and refuel vehicles and golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Repair and replace alternators, voltage regulators, batteries and electrical wiring.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on range ball dispenser, ball washer and range ball picker.
  • Perform maintenance, repair and adjustments to mechanical and electrical attachments to power grounds equipment; troubleshoot, identify and repair electrical malfunctions of grounds equipment and attachments.
  • Order parts and supplies and maintain inventory; maintain repair shop in a clean, safe and orderly condition.
  • Operate a variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment including power and hand tools, reel and bed knife sharpeners, hydraulic press, drills, grinders, compressor, mowers, gauges, meters, impact tools and a variety of golf course equipment; operate heavy grounds equipment as needed including a tractor, gang mower and loaders.
  • Maintain routine records related to equipment maintenance and repair activities, inventory levels, parts used and cost and condition of equipment.
  • Perform general maintenance on electric chargers/ charging cords for electric carts.
  • Perform general maintenance on fuel tank on premises inclusive of fuel levels, re-ordering of fuel and maintenance of pump.
  • Perform electrical and acetylene welding, brazing, soldering and fabrication on tools, equipment and structures when needed.
  • Assist grounds maintenance personnel with a variety of grounds maintenance duties including mowing, spraying and application of chemicals, raking and digging.

About the Seattle Parks & Recreation Golf Courses

SPR golf courses provide a high-quality golf experience for golfers of all abilities.  More than 200,000 rounds of golf are played annually at the courses and help is needed to smoothly run the ground maintenance operations.   

Position Description

Responsible for maintenance of golf course equipment needed to ensure top level playing conditions at the four city owned golf courses. The golf courses operate entirely on revenue and require a well-maintained equipment fleet to meet these revenue goals and support the program. This position will report to the Golf Course Maintenance Supervisor. 

As a Sr. Grounds Equipment Mechanic, you will be directly responsible for equipment maintenance at one of the three 18-hole golf courses owned by the City of Seattle. You will also be responsible for coordinating equipment maintenance at Interbay Golf Course, an executive 9-hole course.

Under general supervision, perform the more difficult and complex diagnosis, maintenance and repair of grounds and facility maintenance equipment, such as small gas-powered engines, larger tractors and mowers, pumps, stationary engines, pressure washers, trams and inclines, refrigerators and appliances, and may provide technical advice to and serve as lead worker for other Grounds Equipment Mechanics.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Requires one year of trade school, community college or similar training in automotive, small engine, or grounds maintenance equipment maintenance and repair work, and three years of experience in repair and maintenance of diesel- and gas-powered equipment and pneumatic or hydraulic power tools (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Job Responsibilities

  • Overhauls or rebuilds power hand tools such as chain saws, edgers, push mowers, leaf blowers and, weed eaters; overhauls two and four-cycle engines with a maximum of two cylinders; performs repairs on steering, brakes, drives and differentials; and troubleshoots and tests hydrostatic drive components.
  • Oversees annual preventive maintenance of production mowing equipment; provides technical advice to and serves as lead worker for other Grounds Equipment Mechanics; performs troubleshooting and diagnosis of particularly difficult mechanical problems; and makes recommendations about types of repairs needed and the appropriate facility or method for carrying them out.
  • Performs repair and maintenance on a variety of special equipment including large stationary gasoline engines, trams and inclines, large water and sewage pumps; and does automotive wiring for tractors, mowers and trailers.
  • Inspects, maintains and makes repairs on refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners; repairs clothes washers and dryers; and performs tune-ups and tests pressure of fire pumps.
  • Operates grinders, lathes, welding equipment and other shop equipment; orders parts as needed; research repair manuals; coordinates with other repair shops; keeps records; cleans shop areas.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Mechanic repairs all equipment associated with the golf course maintenance department. Responsibilities also include planning and implementing a preventative maintenance schedule for equipment, training staff in safe use and proper care and maintenance of assigned equipment, and advising the Superintendent regarding major equipment failures and/or replacement needs.

Assistant Superintendent

A golf course assistant superintendent is responsible for supervising all the outdoor employees and outdoor operations of the golf course. The Assistant Superintendent is mainly responsible for the landscaping and maintenance of the grounds. The Assistant Superintendent assumes responsibility for managing, maintaining, and completion of daily tasks of the golf course property under the supervision and instruction of the General Manager.

The assistant superintendent sets the employee schedules, assigns jobs, and is responsible for organizing the mowing, fertilization, and watering schedules of the entire course.

Duties

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the grounds, with input from consultant
  • Develop weekly plan with management to ensure schedule for mowing, fertilizing, watering, course maintenance, range area, etc.
  • Direct and assist the staff on the planting, replacing, spraying, and pruning of trees and shrubs.
  • Adhere to a detailed plan for the property that provides the facility with a consistent, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere.
  • Manage all water and irrigation systems, aid in the repair and maintenance of necessary equipment.
  • Recruit, supervise, and retain maintenance staff, with help from management.
  • Oversee employees in safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment.
  • Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed, with permission of management.
  • Schedule maintenance practices around daily play, tournaments, and events to the best of their ability, to help minimize disruption to customers.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science and the rules of golf
  • A thorough knowledge of the different methods and materials used in golf courses, ground and landscape areas or construction/maintenance work.
  • Certified to spray fertilizer preferred.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of watering practices and irrigation.
  • Knowledge of wells, pumps, and automatic irrigation control equipment.

What You’ll Do
The Brass Tacks
  • Under the Supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, oversee the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and buffer zones within the property.
  • Help schedule and assign daily tasks to maintenance team members and oversee tasks are executed safely and efficiently.

Overview of Position

Overview

Our Course

The Port Ludlow Golf Course was designed by Architect Robert Muir Graves. It is an 18-hole course that sits in the hills of Port Ludlow overlooking the Puget Sound on the Olympic Peninsula. Partially built on rock and peat bogs, it has its challenges for water retention and holding. Fairways are lined with spruce, fir, and cedar trees. The driving range consists of 3 tiers of tee green, a putting green, chipping green, and a small bunker green.
We have Bentgrass/Poa greens, Poa/Rye/Bluegrass tees and fairways, and Bluegrass/Rye roughs. Our terrain is not flat creating unique challenges to maintaining a playable surface.

You are an individual who is ready to take the next step in your career. You are working on your college degree in agricultural and/or natural resources with an interest in Turfgrass Management. Irrigation Services Specialist

Pacific Golf & Turf, the Rain Bird Distributor for the Pacific Northwest, is seeking an Irrigation Service Specialist to support the needs of golf course customers throughout the region. Ideally, the candidate would be based out of Western Washington or Portland Oregon. However, other locations within PGT’s area of coverage would be considered the right candidate.

The irrigation service specialist will be the first call from customers looking for help and assistance troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with their golf course irrigation systems. This individual will also conduct billable service, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance on systems with customers who need hands-on field support. This position also requires a high percentage of travel (both locally, and regionally in the PNW). Pacific Golf & Turf, the Rain Bird Distributor for the Pacific Northwest, is seeking an Irrigation Specialist for the state of Washington. Ideally, a candidate would be located in Western Washington between Olympia and Seattle. The irrigation specialist is responsible for meeting customer’s needs and grow market share, while maintaining acceptable levels of gross profit and attaining sales revenue targets within an assigned territory. We are looking for the right person for our TEAM. Some details and responsibilities for the position are:

Actively generate sales to existing and new customers: identify potential new customers, conducting sales calls with new and existing customers, conduct product demos, produce and present quotes, negoiate agreements, develop finance proposals

  • Develop and build relationships with irrigation consultants and contractors
  • Develop and implement sales strategies

  • Ensure accurate inventory by providing accurate documentation of all sales, loaners, demos vehicles that you transport. Participate in person in regularly scheduled physical inventories.

Qualification Requirements
  • The candidate must have proven sales skills.
  • Must also have mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn how to operate equipment, diagnose product issues and perform minor adjustments/repairs. While this primarily is a sales role, the irrigation specialist is also hands on in assisting customers with technical service needs and troubleshooting.
  • College degree is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with an attention to detail are required.

Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds Maintenance Program Execution

  • Perform and lead personnel in specialized grounds duties requiring the skill and knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of trees, lawns and ornamental plants.
  • Prepare grounds for lawns, plants, trees and seasonal plantings.
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, shrubs, trees and ground covers.
  • Maintain plants through accepted horticultural standards including raking and removing leaves and litter and removing snow and ice from assigned pathways and stairs during inclement weather events.
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation systems and write work orders for irrigation repair.
  • Order materials to accomplish the work.

  • Operate commercial motorized equipment such as automobiles and trucks - including dump trucks, high rangers, forklifts, scissor-lifts, tractors, front-end loaders, mowers, tillers, sweepers and trailers.
  • Operate small engine equipment such as chain saws, string-line trimmers, sprayers and backpack blowers.
  • Use a variety of hand implements and tools.
  • Load and unload materials and supplies.

Position Information

Essential Duties

Duties may include performing inspection,  performing custodial and cleanup functions as required; cleaning restrooms, toilets, sinks, mirrors and walls; mowing, raking, edging, weeding, fertilizing and water lawns; planting, fertilizing, watering, trimming and pruning shrubs, trees and flowers as assigned; sweeping and blowing debris from walks, hard surfaces and driveways; gathering and removing trash from grounds; preparing rooms or facilities for special functions; moving furniture, small bleachers, equipment and other objects as required; sweeping, mopping, and cleaning floors; vacuuming carpets and rugs. Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record (must attach a 5 year driving abstract or complete motor vehicle report to application in order to be considered for the Maint Asst II position. Failure to attach abstract will result in applicant not being considered for this position .
  • Must be able to operate a variety of hand tools and maintenance equipment to perform assigned tasks.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Mechanic repairs all equipment associated with the golf course maintenance department. Responsibilities also include planning and implementing a preventative maintenance schedule for equipment, training staff in safe use and proper care and maintenance of assigned equipment, and advising the Superintendent regarding major equipment failures and/or replacement needs.

Turf Equipment Demonstrator & Delivery Specialist

Turf Star Western, a leading provider of turf maintenance equipment, is seeking a motivated and dynamic individual for the position of Turf Equipment Demonstrator and Delivery Specialist. In this role, you will actively demonstrate our range of turf maintenance equipment at customer locations, trade shows, field days, and other events to support pre-sale efforts, as well as post sale education. You will also be responsible for delivering and picking up turf equipment from various locations, ensuring prompt and professional service.

Responsibilities

Conduct demonstrations: Showcase the features and capabilities of our turf maintenance equipment to potential customers, providing hands-on experience and addressing inquiries.

Equipment delivery and pick-up: Safely transport turf maintenance equipment to and from different locations, including company facilities, golf courses, municipalities, trade show events, and more. This includes new equipment set-ups, repairs, warehouse transfers, and vehicle transfers.

Customer education and support: Collaborate with our outside sales representatives to provide after-sales support, including customer education and training on the proper operation, features, and safety procedures of their newly acquired equipment.

Professional representation: Represent Turf Star Western in a professional and ethical manner during all interactions with customers, colleagues, vendors, and management. Maintain clear and effective communication, both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications
  • Eligibility: Must be eligible to work in the United States
  • Location: Reside within 30 miles of the TSW facility.
  • Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Driver's license: Possess a valid Class C driver's license.
  • Driving experience: Minimum of 3 years of driving experience with a clean motor vehicle record.
  • Software proficiency: Proven daily use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams) and experience using virtual conferencing solutions.
  • CRM system: Proven experience working in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
  • Customer service: Demonstrated customer service and effective communication skills.
  • Equipment handling: Experience securing heavy equipment with straps and ability to drive a pickup truck while towing a 26-foot flatbed trailer skillfully and safely.
  • Physical abilities: Capable of lifting 50 lbs. without assistance and 75 lbs. with assistance. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Traits: Reliable, organized, detailed, focused, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial lawn maintenance and construction equipment experience/knowledge.
  • Sales experience: Familiarity with sales processes is a plus.
  • Small engine mechanics: Work experience or specialized education in small engine mechanics would be advantageous.
Position Offerings
  • Classification: Non-exempt
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • $22 – $28.00 per hour. The hired applicant's placement within this range is based on qualifications and professional experience.
  • Eligible for discretionary variable compensation.
  • Pay Frequency: Paid 2 times a month (semi-monthly)
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Earned per pay period based on months of continuous service. Starting PTO accrual is 4.00 hours per pay period, equivalent to 8 hours per month.
